From cadle to farm gate the Thomas Bell carbon calculator offers an estimated carbon footprint for UK farmers

Calculate your carbon footprint for your fertiliser

Thomas Bell fertilisers are proud to launch their 'Carbon Calculator’ for their customers – Thomas Bell and ADAS have together created a carbon calculator which follows the ‘’from cradle to farm gate’’ approach offering farmers an estimated carbon footprint for each of their fertiliser purchases.

All stages of the fertilisers life are taken into account, from the extraction of raw materials, energy supply, manufacturing process to the product storage at the production site to arriving on farm.

As a business, we are fully committed to decarbonisation and are delighted to develop this carbon footprint calculator with ADAS.

By launching this tool,  Thomas Bell aims to highlight the importance of carbon reduction throughout the supply chain, including manufacturers and service providers.

Thomas Bell plans to implement the following changes:-

• To commit and strive to offer sustainable fertilisers, services and solutions to contribute to the agricultural industry.
• Work closely with reputable suppliers to source cleaner, greener fertilisers and services.
• Working in partnership with our fertiliser bag manufacturers to ensure we are at the forefront of using packaging that is environmentally sustainable, whilst retaining the strength and quality.
• Create a cradle-to-gate for all of our fertilisers, where customers will receive valuable information about the extent to which Thomas Bell material contribute to the carbon footprint of their business activities and final products.
• On-going investment in responsible transport and day to day operations.

CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY
Thomas Bell sees clear business opportunities in addressing emerging challenges, such as the need to reduce plastic waste and increase recycling and innovation opportunities that ultimately support our companies ambition to grow.

SUSTAINABLE FERTILISERS
Working closely with suppliers who pro-actively work on alternatives to reduce the carbon emissions, where Green Ammonia is to be used in the production of low (zero) carbon fertiliser products. Green hydrogen is already a reality for a vast amount of our suppliers, which is a key factor in achieving climate neutrality and innovative investment plans are in place where they will manufacture crop nutrition solutions with high efficacy and environmental efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

UREASE INHIBITORS
The use of urease inhibitors minimise nitrogen losses from volatilisation, for example LIMUS from BASF, which is already used to inhibitor our Granular Urea. Limus is proven to reduce nitrogen loss by as much as 98 percent, Limus is based on a novel formulation that contains two active ingredients for blocking active sites of soil urease enzymes. The UK government has reaffirmed it’s commitment to these targets in recent strategy documents. It also introduced a Code of Good Agricultural Practice to serve as a guidance document to support reductions, which includes a recommendation to use urease inhibitors.

RESPONSIBLE PACKAGING
Fertiliser packaging plays a critical role in transporting and storing fertiliser safely for farmers across the UK. At Thomas Bell, we work closely with fertiliser bag manufacturers and other key suppliers to reduce the content of plastic and increase the recycled content. We set out with the idea to develop 100% recycled fertiliser bags, unfortunately the materials used are not strong enough to sustain the quantity of fertiliser. A solution has been found, with a fertiliser bag made from 30% recycled material.

Thomas Bell are committed to reducing our environmental impact, which is why our fertiliser bags are made with 30% recycled material. By choosing our products, you are supporting a more sustainable future to minimising plastic waster. Together, we can make a difference.
